Holmberg Orchards farmer's market to benefit New London food center

Ledyard — Holmberg Orchards and Winery of Gales Ferry will host its third annual Pop-Up Farmers Market May 24, including for the first time a food drive to benefit the New London Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center.

The staple of the market, open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., is its more than 30 farmers and artisan vendors offering items from wood-fired breads to kale, to soy wax candles, to dog treats, to raw local honey. Visitors also will be able to try meals from food trucks and to take part in wine tastings and wagon rides.

For the food drive, Holmberg Orchards officials are asking attendees to bring and donate at least one whole grain-rich item that is low in sodium, sugar and fat. The food center especially needs baby food, pasta, cereal, crackers, granola bars and pasta sauce in plastic bottles, according to a Holmberg Orchards' press release.

The farmer's market also marks the opening weekend Holmberg's Wine Tasting Barn, which will be open Saturdays and Sundays through October.
