Rabid raccoon has been found in New London

New London — A raccoon found in a yard off West High Street has tested positive for rabies, Ledge Light Health District announced Thursday.

On Sunday, the raccoon entered a yard where a dog was outside and flopped to the ground, said Ryan McCammon, senior sanitarian at Ledge Light. The homeowner told Ledge Light officials that the dog and the raccoon did not appear to make contact. The homeowner called the city's animal control officer, who euthanized the raccoon and alerted Ledge Light officials on Monday, who took the animal to the state lab for testing, McCammon said. Results were received on Thursday.

McCammon said the dog was up to date on its rabies vaccine but was given a booster shot as a precaution.

The public is urged to refrain from approaching or touching any wild animals. For information, call the animal control officer at (860) 447-5231 or Ledge Light Health District at (860) 448-4882.
