Courtney updates southeastern COG on House denial of BRAC request
Norwich — Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, updated the Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments on Wednesday about another requested round of base closures that the House of Representatives denied.
Courtney, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, said the House passed a defense bill that, among other measures, rejected the president’s request for Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC).
“This is the third year in a row there has been a request for BRAC,” he told the regional planning council. “It was again rejected, and I think the same is going to happen in the Senate.”
Courtney also said a proposed change in language, if it makes it through the approval process, will require the Pentagon next year to provide more specific and focused information regarding where it believes there is potential overcapacity in the system.
Courtney said he has been hearing conversations that indicate the overcapacity in the system exists in the Army and Air Force.
