Old Saybrook committee to host presentation on climate change, sea level rise

Old Saybrook — The Old Saybrook Sea Level Rise Committee will host a presentation and discussion this month about the effects of climate change and sea level rise in Old Saybrook.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. June 23 at the Pasbeshauke Pavilion at Saybrook Point, 155 College Street Extension.

More than 50 percent of the parcels in town are in the 100-year-flood plain, an area that will expand with climate change and sea level rise, according to a news release.

Some areas in town currently experience flooding of streets with each astronomical high tide, the release states.

First Selectman Carl Fortuna has asked that a Sea Level Rise and Climate Adaptation Committee be commissioned to begin identifying the potentials impact of sea level rise and climate change on the community, according to the release.

The committee is drafting a report of its study, which includes recommendations for the town to consider.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
