Groton Democrats seek candidates for office

The Town Democratic Committee is seeking candidates for offices including the Town Council, Board of Education and Representative Town Meeting, according to a news release by Groton Democrats.

Elections will be held Nov. 3 for all nine seats on the Town Council, six of the nine seats on the Board of Education and 41 seats on the RTM.

State statute requires minority representation on the Board of Education and RTM. This means no more than six members from one party may serve on the Board of Education. On the RTM, the requirement varies by district, because the number of seats per district depends on the number of registered voters living in each one.

For example, in District 6, which covers Mystic, one party may hold a maximum of five of the seven seats. Minority representation rules do not apply to the Town Council, said Town Clerk Betsy Moukawsher.

Party endorsements must be done from July 21-28 and registered with the town clerk by 4 p.m. on July 29, she said.

The Democratic Town Committee is seeking Democratic and Independent voters for seats on its slate, including residents of Groton City and Groton Long Point who wish to become involved in town government, committee Chairman Conrad Heede said in a news release. He may be reached at (860) 800-4784.
