Stonington borough Fourth of July parade adds post-parade activities

Stonington — The Stonington Historical Society will hold its traditional Fourth of July parade of residents through the borough with a few after-parade activities this year.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Wadawanuck Square as residents dressed in red, white and blue, some towing decorated wagons, and children on bikes march down to Cannon Square and back led by Fred Burdick, parade marshal and town historian. The society requests that those marching with their dogs have them properly restrained. Once back at Wadawanuck Square there will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence, singing of the National Anthem and then the traditional casting of a pox on King George by the crowd.

After the ceremony, there will then be free ice cream provided by the Dog Watch Café and the Stonington Village Improvement Association at Mathews Park followed by a free concert entitled “Stars, Stripes, and Strings” at 11:15 a.m. at Calvary Church led by Joseph Ripka, the church’s director of music.
