East Lyme school board extends top administrators' contracts

East Lyme — The Board of Education unanimously voted Tuesday to extend the superintendent's and assistant superintendent's employment contracts.

The school board approved a three-year contract extension for Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey R. Newton's term through June 30, 2018.

The board also voted to extend the contract of Interim Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Pupil Personnel Donna Gittleman for another year through June 30, 2016.

Newton joined the school district in April, following the retirement of former Superintendent James Lombardo.

A graduate of East Lyme High School, Newton had previously served as superintendent of schools in Hebron.

The contract sets his salary at $175,000 for the 2015-16 school year and at $180,687 for the 2016-17 school year.

Gittleman became interim assistant superintendent in August, after former assistant superintendent Brian Reas left the district to become superintendent of schools in East Haddam.

Gittleman had been the director of special services at Cromwell Public Schools and previously served as the director of pupil services at Enfield Public Schools.

Her annual salary for 2015-16 is $148,000, according to the contract.
