Nature Conservancy preserves 130 acres in lower Connecticut River watershed

East Haddam — The Nature Conservancy on Wednesday announced the acquisition of more than 130 acres of forests and wetlands along two tributaries of the lower Connecticut River.

The parcels are the 113-acre Lefebre property and the 20-acre Zeleznicky property, both in East Haddam.

The larger parcel connects Devil’s Hopyard State Park and the conservancy’s Burnham Brook Preserve, protecting land in the Eightmile River and Connecticut River watersheds.

The smaller parcel includes 1,000 feet of Burham Brook.

Open space grants totaling $341,000 from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are funding the purchase. The larger parcel will be owned and managed by the conservancy and town, while the 20-acre parcel will be owned and managed by the town.

“Protecting the forests and wetlands that border Connecticut River tributaries benefits the health of the entire lower Connecticut river, as well as everything — and everyone — that relies on it,” said Sarah Pellegrino, land protection and strategies manager for the conservancy’s Connecticut chapter, in a news release. “In this case, the newly protected land will help preserve water quality for brook trout, migratory fish and mussels provide habitat for migratory birds and other animals and secure beautiful outdoor sports where current and future generations can hike, bird watch and simply get out in the woods.”
