Police investigate death of Pawcatuck Middle School student

Stonington — Police are investigating the death of a 13-year-old girl Wednesday night.

School officials identified the girl in an email to families as Shelbi Lipowski, a seventh-grade student at Pawcatuck Middle School.

According to Capt. Todd Olson, police and Westerly ambulance responded to an address in Pawcatuck at 7:07 p.m. for a report of a medical incident.

He said resuscitation efforts were undertaken and the girl was taken to Westerly Hospital, where she died. Detectives responded to the scene and Olson said the incident remains under investigation.

An autopsy was performed by the Rhode Island Medical Examiner Wednesday morning. A Rhode Island Department of Health spokeswoman said a cause of death has not yet been determined.

“On behalf of the entire Stonington police department, we wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family and to the Stonington Public School students and staff. We will be working together with the school system to assist in coping with this extremely unfortunate tragedy,” Olson said.

In informing school families of Lipowski’s death, school officials said, “At this time, we do not have any additional information to share about her passing. This news might be difficult for many of you and for our students. During this time, we need to support one another and respect that each person may react differently. For those of you who knew Shelbi and her family, you may feel upset, saddened, angry, frustrated, or numb. Any and all emotions are normal. For this reason, we encourage parents to have open conversations with their children around grief and loss.”

The email added, “Our thoughts are with the Lipowski family during this very difficult time.”

Officials also strongly advised parents to “closely monitor student social media during this time, as well as monitor your children for signs of stress.”

Resources to assist with talking with children are available at stoningtonschools.org and at Pawcatuck Middle School. The school is open Thursday through 7 p.m. for families and children who need additional support and mental health staff is available.

Additional support times will be posted on the school website. Families also may speak to mental health staff by calling the school at (860) 599-5696.
