Blessing of the Fleet Sunday in Stonington

Stonington — The 62nd annual Blessing of The Fleet celebration will be held Sunday in the borough beginning with a fishermen’s Mass celebrated by Bishop of Norwich the Most Rev. Michael Cote at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church.

There will then be a procession to the Town Dock with Tim Medeiros, captain of the Susan and Francis, as the grand marshal.

The blessing honors all deceased fishermen and their families and wishes the present fishermen and their families good health, good catches and safe voyages.

After Bishop Cote blesses the boats, the fishing boat Neptune captained by Alan Chaplaski will lead a procession out into the harbor, where flowers in the shape of a broken anchor will be placed overboard in memory of the 37 local men who have died at sea.

Their names are on the monument at the Town Dock.

From noon to 4 p.m., there will be food and beverages at the dock with music provided by The Country Misfits.

A new addition to the blessing this year was a 5K road race, which was held Thursday night.
