Salem — The Democratic caucus last week nominated a slate of candidates for various town positions, including Kevin Lyden for first selectmen, a post the unaffiliated candidate has held for the past six years.

"He has managed and guided the town through difficult times and has worked diligently with residents, boards and commissions," Robyn McKenney, chair of the caucus, said. "Kevin shared his vision for our town as we move forward. He discussed the importance of working together to find efficiencies and develop new processes as our town adapts to changes in the economy and population"

Five of the 26 candidates nominated, including Lyden, are unaffiliated. Seven candidates are incumbents. 

They include: Pam Henry to a two-year term as town treasurer; Cheryl Philopena to a two-year term as tax collector; Janet Griggs to a six-year term on the Board of Finance; Carol Eckart to a six-year term on the Board of Finance; Phil Texiera to a two-year term on the Board of Education; Ruth Savalle to a six-year term on the Planning and Zoning Commission; Charlie Dutch to a six-year term on the Zoning Board of Appeals; and Becky Nortz to a four-year term on the Zoning Board of Appeals.

"It was a very smooth process, a very positive caucus," McKenney said, noting both good turn out and discussion. "It was an open process. We feel we have a great slate of candidates going forward."

She said a common theme among the candidates was the need for all boards and commissions to work together effectively to meet the needs of town residents, be responsive in changing times and to be knowledgeable, committed and prepared and work to improve the quality of life for residents.

"Our incumbent candidates spoke of their experience and dedication to the town," McKenney said. "Candidates seeking new office discussed a desire to serve the town, to be prepared, knowledgeable, and transparent in their efforts. We believe that the mix of incumbents and candidates new to office will bring a vitality of ideas and actions to the work of our boards and commissions."

The Salem Democratic caucus, she said, will be sponsoring a "listening tour" throughout the fall to engage voters "in discussion through ongoing events and activities."
