    Spanish galleon replica to visit New London's City Pier

    New London — El Galeón, a 170-foot-long wooden replica of a galleon that was part of Spain’s West Indies fleet, is slated to arrive at City Pier on Wednesday.

    The ship will be open for tours between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday through Monday, Aug. 10. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children age 12 and under, and may be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1978581, at the Custom House Maritime Museum daily between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., and weekends at the kiosk at City Pier between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Its visit is sponsored by the city and the New London Maritime Society.

    Those who take the self-guided walking tour of the ship’s five decks can talk to current crew members and view dozens of interactive exhibitions, videos, historical documents and displays. The ship is stopping here on its way back to Spain after spending several months in Florida as a main feature of the 450th commemoration of the founding of St. Augustine, Fla. The ship and the Amistad, also docked at Waterfront Park, both appeared in the NBC television series “Crossbones."

    The ship can also be rented for private events every evening it is here from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Contact the New London Maritime Society at 860-447-8700 for information. A pirate party will be held aboard the ship from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 6. Tickets are $30; information is available at www.nlmaritimesociety.org.
