    Rabid skunk found in Ledyard

Ledyard — Ledge Light Health District says a skunk in the area of Goulart Road tested positive for rabies on Tuesday.

In a news release Tuesday, the district urged the public to refrain from feeding or approaching any wild or stray animals.

Rabies can infect all warm-blooded animals, including people. The deadly virus lives in the saliva and brain tissue of infected animals, and can be spread by scratches from infected animals or when infected saliva comes into contact with breaks in the skin or mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, mouth.

Anyone with questions or concerns should contact Ledge Light at (860) 448-4882 or Ledyard Animal Control at (860) 464-6400.
