St. Michael School in Pawcatuck granted continued accreditation

Stonington — Saint Michael School has been granted continued accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges after a two-year process that involved self-evaluation, study reports and a visit by a NEASC committee in April. The Catholic school in Pawcatuck, which serves students in grades kindergarten through 8, received official notification of continued accreditation in July.

The school also announced that results from its Iowa Test of Basic Skills indicated that its students performed in the top 15 percent in the nation in reading and mathematics.

Middle school students tested at least two grades above their level. The sixth grade performed as well as 8th graders taking the same test, while the seventh grade performed at a tenth grade level. Eighth graders scored as well as college freshman on all the tests.

Eighth graders also participated in the National Latin Exam — Introductory Latin Level, and scored above the national average. Four of the eight students who took the exam received awards for achievement and two received awards for outstanding achievement.
