Rabid bat found in New London home

New London — A bat found in a home on Woodlawn Road on Wednesday has tested positive for rabies, Ledge Light Health District announced Sunday.

Ryan McCammon, supervisor of environmental health at Ledge Light, said Monday that the bat was found in the bedroom of a home. The woman who slept in the bedroom had no bites or scratches, but was advised to receive rabies treatment as a precaution, McCammon said. She began the treatment on Saturday.

"We don't believe there was any human contact," he said.

The woman was also advised to have a large hole in the side of the house where the bat is likely to have entered repaired, he said.

The public is reminded to refrain from feeding or approaching any wild animals. For information, call the city's animal control officer at (860) 447-5231 or Ledge Light Health District at (860) 448-4882.
