Tribal spokesman elected to Mohegan council

Mohegan — Joe Smith, a spokesman for the Mohegan Tribe, has been elected to the Mohegan Tribal Council, as have three incumbents who also were among the top vote-getters in weeks of secret balloting that concluded Sunday.

Winning new four-year terms were: Mark Brown, Thayne Hutchins Jr. and Cheryl Todd.

Eight candidates sought the four seats up for election to the nine-member council, which oversees tribal government as well as the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, operator of Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, one of the world’s largest casinos; Mohegan Sun Pocono in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and other gaming enterprises.

The council also oversees the Mohegan Holdings Co., the entity that pursues the 2,000-member tribe’s non-gaming business ventures.

Tribal sources confirmed the election outcome, which will not become official until a swearing-in ceremony next month at the Mohegan Church.

Smith, 59, of Middletown is expected to leave his job as manager of tribal communications to join the council.

According to his online biography, he has worked in communications for the tribe since 2007 and before as a publicist and communications specialist for Mohegan Sun.

He worked for several major film studios on the West Coast before returning to his native Uncasville in 2003.

He is a graduate of Montville High School and Columbia University in New York City.

Among the incumbents re-elected, Mark Brown has served on the council continuously since 1995, including a stint as chairman from 2000 to 2005.

Hutchins, the council treasurer, and Todd, recording secretary, were first elected in 2007.

Councilors Kevin Brown, the chairman; James Gessner Jr., vice chairman; Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum, William Quidgeon Jr. and Kathy Regan-Pyne were not up for re-election. Their terms extend to 2017.
