    Old Lyme launches alert system

Old Lyme — The town has posted a notice on its website that it has launched "Old Lyme Alerts."

The notice states that residents and business owners can register their contact information to receive messages from the town about emergency situations.

The contact information provided is protected and will not be used for any other purpose.

Old Lyme Alerts registration cards are available at the Town Hall, Old Lyme Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library and Lymes' Senior Center, or residents can register through a link posted on the notice on the town's website.

The notice states that the town will send registered users a message when an emergency occurs, such as an impending storm, road closures, a health threat, police situation or flooding.

The notifications will be sent by text message, email and cellphone, home or work phone. Each participant will receive the messages via her or his preferred communication method.

The message will contain instructions on how to confirm receipt. If the participant does not confirm, the system automatically will try to reach the participant using another registered contact method.

For example, if a participant does not confirm receipt of a home email, the system will send the same message to the participant's home phone, cellphone or another provided email address or phone number.

More information is available on the town's website, http://www.oldlyme-ct.gov.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
