Ledge Light Health District gets farmers market grant

Ledge Light Health District has been awarded a grant of more than $99,000 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farmers Market Promotion Program to help increase sales and consumption of locally grown produce and agricultural products, according to a release from the office of U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District.

The grant "will support a number of projects in New London County designed to strengthen farmers markets," said Cindy Barry, Senior Program Coordinator for Ledge Light Health District.

The intent is to work with existing farmer markets and improve access to fresh, locally grown produce and other foods, and to support local farmers.

“The increasing consumer focus on locally grown food, coupled with this grant that will help Ledge Light Health District promote their farmers market to the surrounding communities, will be a benefit to our farms and a boost to healthy eating habits,” Courtney was quoted as saying.
