Mystic YMCA to seek state grant to help fund renovation

Mystic — The Ocean Community YMCA has told members of its Mystic branch that it is seeking a “significant six figure grant” through the state Office of Policy and Management to offset the estimated $7.2 million cost to expand and renovate the facility.

In a letter to branch members, YMCA Executive Director Maureen Fitzgerald said the YMCA has submitted an application for the grant. She also wrote that State Senator Andrew Maynard, D-18th District, has toured the branch and “sees the great promise this project has for our community.”

“He strongly endorses it and pledged to do all he can to promote its strong consideration in Hartford,” she wrote.

Fitzgerald said the YMCA, which offers financial assistance to those who can not afford memberships, now needs members to bring the project to the attention of “key decision makers in Hartford.”

“We are being advised that letters of endorsement can weigh heavily in our favor and that letters from members are even more compelling,” she wrote.

The YMCA has temporarily has withdrawn its application for zoning approval of the project as it addresses some issues Stonington officials have raised with the original application. The YMCA hopes to be back with a revised application in 60 to 90 days and then a public hearing would be held.

Plans call for demolishing a portion of the building, adding a 12,500-square-foot addition to the rear, renovating the remainder of the building and adding parking. There would be improved handicapped access, new locker rooms including family and special needs locker rooms and a new entrance area.

The YMCA plans to launch a capital campaign to help fund the majority of the project.
