Grant to help build garden at Riverfront Children's Center

Groton — The Riverfront Children’s Center will receive a $1,000 grant from the Groton Parks Foundation to support building a “tranquility garden” to benefit children and families served by the center, a foundation news release said.

“The mission of the tranquility garden is to enhance the mental health of the 140 children who attend the Riverfront Center,” foundation President John Silsby said in a statement. “The garden will become a community asset and benefit members of the public who visit it.”

The garden is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2016, and will be open to children, families and community members served by the center, a nonprofit group that provides early childhood education and full-time care to local children.

“We are very grateful to the Groton Parks Foundation for supporting this very critical project that will not only improve the social emotional health of all our children and families but also create a space that can be used for the wider community,” said Susan Corrice, financial director of Riverfront.

The foundation raises money to support recreation, sports, leisure and athletics programs in Groton, and focuses on parks and playground programs.
