Waterford RTM discusses labor contract behind closed doors, appoints replacement member

Waterford -- The Representative Town Meeting began its first post-election meeting with a lengthy discussion about a labor contract for municipal employees and the replacement of one member who resigned shortly after being elected.

The body began its new session Monday with 10 newly elected members on the 22-member body, which Town Clerk Bob Nye said may be the most turnover in his almost 24 years working for the town.

One of those 10 was Jeremy Grabel, who the Democratic Town Committee nominated as a replacement for Andrea F. Kanfer. Kanfer was elected to represent District 1 in November's elections, but resigned shortly after. RTM members voted to approve his seat on the RTM shortly before Monday's meeting.

Republicans hold the majority on Representative Town Meeting for the third two-year term in a row.

The RTM re-elected Thomas Dembek for a third term as moderator. The body also appointed members to its standing committees and held a more than hour-long executive session to discuss labor contracts with the municipal government’s largest union, the 72-member Local 1303-037, which represents employees of the Recreation and Parks Department, the Public Works Department and secretarial staff, among others.
