North Stonington Selectmen to get update on emergency services building

North Stonington — Members of the Emergency Services Building Committee will present an updated presentation on the status of the building project during Tuesday night's Board of Selectmen meeting and will discuss their estimates of additional funding the project would need to go forward as presented.

The project stalled in August after the committee rejected all the bids for the new emergency services building, citing questions from the contractors that made them uncertain whether they could stay within the budget.

However, the project got a boost on Friday when state Rep. Diana Urban, D-No. Stonington, announced that the State Bond Commission had approved a $300,000 grant to aid with site improvements.

In discussing the grant, Urban praised the committee's work in finding cost-efficient solutions and said she worked on the funding during the entire legislative session with state Sen. Andrew Maynard, D-Stonington, because the region needs effective emergency services and the town had shown strong financial support for the project.

"When the municipality steps up, that's the opportunity for the state to be a partner," she said.
