    First-day hikes offered at state parks around Connecticut

    The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is sponsoring five free, guided hikes on New Year’s Day.

    First Day hikes are being sponsored in state parks nationwide on Jan. 1, DEEP said in a news release Wednesday.

    First Day Hikes will be offered at:

    • Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave., Derby, 1 p.m. This will be a moderate, 2.5-mile hike of Osbornedale State Park. For information, contact Diane Joy at: diane.joy@ct.gov, (203) 734-2513.

    • Hammonasset Beach State Park, 1288 Boston Post Road, Madison, 1 p.m. This will be an easy, one-hour hike starting at Meigs Point Nature Center. It is sponsored by Friends of the Office of State Archaeology and Friends of Hammonasset. For information, contact Don Rankin at (203) 245-9192.

    • Mansfield Hollow State Park, Bassett’s Bridge Road, Mansfield, 11 a.m. (arrive by 10:45 a.m.). Two moderate hikes are offered – one 4.5 miles and another 2.2 miles. Hikers should meet in the Mansfield Hollow Recreation Area parking lot. The hikes are sponsored by Friends of Mansfield Hollow.     • Scantic River State Park, Melrose Road, East Windsor, 1 p.m. This is a moderate, 2.5-mile, two-hour hike. Participants should meet in the parking lot at end of Melrose Road off Broad Brook Road. It is sponsored by East Windsor American Heritage River Commission.     • Sleeping Giant State Park, 200 Mount Carmel Ave., Hamden, 1:30 p.m. (arrive by 1:15 p.m.). Two strenuous, 1½-hour and 2½-hour hikes are offered. Hikers should meet at the bulletin board by the kiosk. It is sponsored by Sleeping Giant Park Association. For information, contact: hike_the_giant@yahoo.com.

    “With seasonably cold and dry weather predicted for New Year’s Day, taking a hike with your family and friends is a great way to begin the New Year,” said Robert Klee, DEEP commissioner. “Whether you join DEEP for a guided hike or venture out on your own, you will not be disappointed in the variety of hiking trails that Connecticut has to offer. Our state has hundreds of miles of trails ready for you as you celebrate the first day of 2016.”
