Report quantifies economic impact of state's hospitals

Connecticut hospitals contributed $21.3 billion to the state and local economies in 2014, according to “Connecticut Hospitals: 2016 Economic Impact Report” released on Wednesday by the Connecticut Hospital Association.

Connecticut hospitals provide the full-time equivalent of 55,000 jobs, and nearly every hospital job produces another Connecticut job outside the hospital, according to the report.

Hospitals generate 108,000 jobs in Connecticut. In addition to that, hospital spending generates economic activity in communities throughout the state, the report says.

In 2014, Connecticut hospitals generated $10.9 billion in annual local payroll, $8.8 billion in spending on goods and services and $1.6 billion in capital spending.

“Hospitals continue to play a critical role in preserving, protecting and improving the lives of all of the people in Connecticut,” said Jennifer Jackson, chief executive officer of the hospital association.
