Five more heroin overdoses reported in region

New London — Five more overdose cases resulting from a potent strain of heroin were reported Saturday, according to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

The latest cases, which came from New London, Groton and Ledyard, brought to 14 the total number of overdoses since Wednesday, one of which resulted in a death, according to Michael O'Farrell, spokesman for L+M.

The state Department of Health and the Connecticut Poison Control Center sent a statewide alert to hospitals, outpatient clinics and abuse treatment centers on Friday.

The alert asks health care providers to warn their patients about the drug.

Overdose cases before Saturday were reported in New London, Waterford, Stonington and other area towns and resulted in the administration of Narcan, a medication that counteracts the effects of opiods. Some patients who received the drug left the hospital before they were stable, according to L+M.
