    A wooden rose is forever

Jessica Hickey, left, and Heather Mathieu, science teachers at Montville High School and advisors to the Class of 2017, have arranged for the sale of 400 wooden roses this Valentine’s Day as a fundraiser for the class.

The two advisors for Montville High School’s junior class are getting a little creative with their class fundraising efforts — and getting into the spirit of Valentine’s Day.

During the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, the school’s halls will be flooded with hundreds of real-looking roses, all made of carved wood and available for Montville’s lovebirds and friends.

It’s a creative way to raise money for junior class activities like the prom and class gifts, science teacher and Class of 2017 advisor Jessica Hickey said last week.

The tradition began last year, when Hickey had the idea to order the flowers and try out a new fundraising idea.

Hickey and fellow science teacher and junior class advisor Heather Mathieu wanted a fundraiser that would fit the holiday and be easy to sell.

The wooden roses, it turned out, were perfect.

“In three days I sold 300 flowers,” Hickey said.

It was so successful that Hickey and Mathieu sold the roses again on Mother’s Day, and this year ordered 400 more to sell during the week before Valentine’s Day.

When students file into her classroom at lunchtime to buy the roses, the school will be abuzz with talk of secret admirers and loyal friends.

Teachers will pass out the flowers sent to students during their classes the week of Valentine’s Day, hopefully with some subtlety, Hickey said.

“We try to make it not too distracting,” she said.

At $2 each, and $3 if you want it delivered to a friend or secret crush, the roses are inexpensive and have proven popular among students, parents and even other teachers.

“It was kind of neat to see people walking around and holding them (last year),” Mathieu said.

The money raised will go toward expenses for the junior prom, class gifts and other class events throughout the year.

“It’s for all the things they’ll need before senior year,” Mathieu said.

Among young couples learning to navigate the holiday, Hickey said the roses have the potential to cause some friction. One student last year received two roses — one from her boyfriend, and one from an anonymous admirer.

She gave the second one back, Hickey said.

“She just said, ‘I don’t know who sent this to me, I don’t want it.’”

The wooden roses, which arrived last month from Connecticut-based Roses of Wood in several large boxes, don’t need water. And unlike many teenage romances, Hickey said, they will last forever.

The roses are on sale in the school and are available for visitors in the school’s main office this week.
