    Rabid fox found in Ledyard

Ledyard — A fox found in the area of Avery Hill Road has tested positive for rabies, Ledge Light Health District announced Tuesday.

A resident of the area spotted the fox in his backyard on Feb. 1, said Ryan McCammon, senior sanitarian with Ledge Light.

The fox ran toward the man, who tripped while attempting to get away.

The fox then jumped on top of him, McCammon said.

The man called the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, who sent an environmental conservation officer to the property.

The EnCon officer shot and killed the fox and took it to the state laboratory for rabies testing.

McCammon said the man has received the rabies vaccine as a precaution.

The public is reminded to refrain from feeding or approaching any wild animals.

Anyone with questions or concerns should contact Ledge Light at (860) 448-4882 or the town animal control officer at (860) 464-9621.
