Region could get 4 to 7 inches of snow Monday

It may be spring, but southeastern Connecticut is expected to get a late taste of winter Monday.

Between 4 and 7 inches of heavy, wet snow is expected along the shoreline before ending in the mid- to late morning, according to Gary Lessor, meteorologist with The Weather Center at Western Connecticut State University. The snow is not expected to stick around long as temperatures will rise into the mid 40s Monday and Tuesday and the mid 50s on Wednesday.

The University of Connecticut has canceled classes at all campuses until noon on Monday. Ledyard implemented a parking ban as of 9 p.m. Sunday. Stonington schools have tentatively called for a 90-minute delayed opening on Monday but that could change if roads are not cleared, according to a school announcement on Sunday night.

Southeastern Massachusetts could get 8 to 12 inches with northern coastal Maine seeing up to 11 inches.

The snow is the result of a low pressure system off the coast of the Carolinas mixing with cold air from Canada. The New York City area, though, is only forecast to receive 1 to 3 inches overnight Sunday with clear skies Monday.
