Referendum on Lyme-Old Lyme schools' budget to be held Tuesday

A referendum on the Lyme-Old Lyme schools' 2016-17 budget will take place between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Voting for Lyme residents will be held at the Hamburg Fire Station at Route 156 in Lyme. Old Lyme residents can vote at the Cross Lane Firehouse on Cross Lane in Old Lyme.

The school district's budget meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the Lyme-Old Lyme High School auditorium.

The Lyme-Old Lyme Board of Education's budget for 2016-17 is $33,470,376, or 2.84 percent more than the current budget.

"This budget supports existing programs, class size guidelines, and ongoing technology, facility and program improvements," Board of Education Chairman Michelle Roche and Superintendent of Schools Ian Neviaser wrote in their letter to the community in the district's budget book. "Areas showing an increase include employee contractual obligations and special education. These factors are offset by decreases in the operations budget as a result of our declining enrollment and a reduction in debt service."
