East Lyme Water and Sewer Commission approves budgets, will set rates in October

East Lyme — The Water and Sewer Commission approved last week operating budgets for 2016-17, and is expected to set the water and sewer rates in October.

The commission approved a $2.79 million budget for the water department that is 2.5 percent more than the current budget.

For the sewer department, the commission approved a $2.13 million budget, or 1.5 percent more than the current spending plan.

First Selectman Mark Nickerson, the chairman of the Water and Sewer Commission, said the budgets reflect maintenance costs, and the commission is waiting to see how revenues come in before setting the rates this fall.

The town is monitoring the effect that the reduction in the prison population will have on water and sewer usage, he said.
