Area letter carriers to hold food drive Saturday

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its 24th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday to support local food pantries, with carriers picking up food along their route to support the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center and its member pantries.

Food such as pasta/noodles, cereal, macaroni and cheese as well as canned tuna, are among the most needed items, according to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, which encourages donations of items that are whole grain rich and low in sodium.

The "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive is the largest one-day food drive in the nation, according to the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut.

According to the National Association of Letter Carriers, 41,464 pounds of food was collected in New London County in 2015, or a total of 34,500 meals. This helped to support the nearly 1 in 5 children in the county that need good food.
