Former state labor commissioner will face McCarty in race for 38th District

Waterford— State Rep. Kathleen McCarty will face a Democratic challenger in the race to represent the 38th General Assembly district this fall.

Democratic delegates unanimously endorsed Sharon Palmer, who was a math teacher, the president of Connecticut’s second-largest teachers’ union and a Waterford Representative Town Meeting member and moderator before being appointed as the state’s labor commissioner in 2012. She retired in October.

Palmer won the endorsement Monday at the 38th District’s nominating convention.

“It is most important to rebuild the Democratic delegation of southeastern Connecticut by working together, collaborating and listening to our constituents,” she said.

The district includes Waterford and part of the Uncasville section of Montville.

She will run against McCarty, a Republican Waterford school board member who is finishing her first term in the General Assembly seat.

McCarty, a Waterford native, received her nomination to run for re-election from district Republicans at their party’s nominating convention Monday.

She served this term on the House Appropriations, Education and Public Health committees.

Lauren Shaw, a 2013 Waterford High School graduate from Quaker Hill, will also run for the 38th District seat as a member of the Green Party.
