EL students’ films shown in New Haven festival

Films created by two East Lyme Middle School students were selected for the New Haven Documentary Film Festival.

Fifth-grader Cora Muschinsky’s film “CSN: Cinema Shot News,” a spoof on cable network news shows, and sixth-grader Jasper Wright’s film “Wooly’s World,” the story of a rescue dog named Wooly Bear, earned spots at the June 5th festival, according to a news release.

The students created the films during the East Lyme Public Library Movie Maker Project. Gorman Bechard, the director of 14 feature films, was the lead instructor of the project.

The films were shown during the “Middle School Shorts Block” event at the Whitney Humanities Center at Yale University in New Haven.

Another film by Jasper, a project created during his social studies class, will be shown. “Chinawood or Hollywood” is a look at the Chinese acquisition of Legendary Entertainment.

The Movie Maker project is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Connecticut State Library. The Annual Fund Drive for the East Lyme Public Library also provided funds.

Films by Sammi Cohen, Marielle Kan, Jared Linder, Maria McLane, James O’Connor, Michelle Shavnya, Cameron Steward, Erricson Wich, and Zachary Wyatt were also submitted to the festival.

The East Lyme Public Library Movie Maker Project will hold two workshop series for middle school students this summer. More information is available at eastlymepubliclibrary.org or by calling (860) 739-6926.
