New London firefighter's union awards scholarships

New London — The New London Firefighter’s Union has awarded eight high school seniors $1,000 scholarships from the Dr. Carl Wies Scholarship Trust.

The scholarships were awarded based on individual essays, significant community involvement, charitable service and academic achievement.

The recipients are: New London High School seniors Karen Cuzco, Sandrine Etienne, Tiffany McPhearson, Anais Mercado and Carla Morocho; Grasso Tech senior Kiana Wiggins; East Lyme High School senior Hanna LeBeau; and Montville High School senior Terrance Zhang.

The Dr. Carl Wies Scholarship Trust was established in the 1980s to honor Wies, a New London resident and physician who died in 1986. He was renowned for his community involvement and charitable nature.

A graduate of Yale School of Medicine and a World War II physician, he continued to practice medicine in New London for 50 years. He was known for making house calls, providing free care to those unable to pay, and responding to calls for help at all hours and in all weather.

Wies also regularly responded to fire scenes and was known among firefighters as “the night angel.”

The scholarship is funded with the help of contributions of New London area residents and businesses.
