Pawcatuck residents asked to curb water use

Stonington — The Board of Selectmen is urging Pawcatuck residents to curb their water use because of a drought that has caused low water levels for the Westerly Water Co., which provides water to the eastern section of town.

The town will now begin a public awareness campaign and encourage residents to take voluntary measures over the next 60 days until the drought subsides.

The Westerly Town Council has implemented mandatory water restrictions to help alleviate the shortage. An odd-even day system, depending on a home’s address, has been instituted for uses such as watering lawns and washing cars.

Stonington selectmen, though, said they will first implement a voluntary program.
