Charlie Ebbinghaus is the recipient of the 2016 Jacqueline B. Nixon Community Service Award. The award was presented at the annual City of Groton Day celebration on August 5. The award honors a member of the community who has contributed his or her time, energy and resources to make the community a better place.

A check for $1,000 was presented to the Fairview Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut in Ebbinghaus’s honor.

Groton Utilities also presented Shirley Dunbar-Rose and Phil Tuthill with community service merit awards for their outstanding service to the community. A check for $500 was presented to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center in Rose’s honor and a check for $500 was presented to the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery Association in Tuthill’s honor.

Groton Utilities created the award in 2004 and named it after Nixon, who operated a food pantry in her residence for 24 years. She died July 6, 2004, after a brief battle with cancer.
