East Lyme Water Department to flush water mains in north end of town

East Lyme — The town's Water Department announced in a notice Wednesday that it will conduct routine flushing of the water mains over the next two months in the north end of town in the areas of Flanders Road, Chesterfield Road, Boston Post Road and all adjoining side streets.

Residents should be advised that temporary discoloration of the water may occur in these areas during flushing.

When flushing is conducted, sediment that accumulates in the mains becomes disturbed and temporarily suspended in the water causing a brown, red, orange or yellow color, according to the notice. This disturbance usually lasts for approximately two to four hours.

The discolored water is not a health threat. However, the discolored water can stain clothing, so it is best to wait several hours for the water to clear before doing any laundry.

Also, residents should not use any hot water as they may draw the discolored water into their hot water tank, which may have to be flushed later.

Residents who were doing laundry when the water became discolored, should rewash the laundry later when the water is clear. They should use a rust stain remover or regular detergent and should not use chlorine bleach. Chlorine can react with iron and form a permanent stain.

Residents with questions can call the Water Department at (860) 691-4104.
