Crews tending to water main break in area of Federal, Huntington streets
New London — Crews are responding to the area of Federal and Huntington streets in response to a large water main break.
The break was first reported around noon. As of 6 p.m., the water had not been shut off completely, though some buildings in the area were without water, fire Battalion Chief Edward Sargent said late Saturday.
Sargent said the road had been substantially damaged and undermined, requiring repaving.
St. James' Episcopal Church, 76 Federal St., and Tony D's Restaurant, 92 Huntington St., were among the nearby buildings affected by the main break.
Sargent said water had entered the church, while the restaurant was without water. He said the fire department and Veolia Water, the city's water utility, assisted the restaurant with getting a temporary water supply from a nearby hydrant.
In addition to Veolia and the fire department, crews from Eversource, Atlantic Broadband and the city's public works department were on the scene.
Because the water main break occurred near a gas main, there were some concerns that the gas main might be affected, Sargent said.
The road was closed in the area where the break occurred and was expected to remain closed for some time. Traffic is not passable at the intersection and motorists will have to seek alternate routes to get to the downtown area and Interstate 95.
