Veterans to be served coffee with conversation

After success in Killingly, a program to bring senior veterans together over coffee is coming to Stonington.

Gina King, program coordinator and grant specialist for Thames Valley Council for Community Action, said a new Veterans’ Coffeehouse at the Stonington Human Services office, continues a long military tradition of service members bonding over coffee.

“It’s a place where men and women, of all ages and all branches of service can come together for coffee, conversation, and connect with one another and build camaraderie, while discussing common issues and needs,” she said. The Stonington coffeehouse will take place every other Thursday.

The next one in Stonington will be held 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 22 at 166 South Broad St., Pawcatuck. It will include a visit from state Rep. Diana Urban, D-Stonington.

RSVP is collaborating with Stonington and Rotary.

Last year, TVCCA started a veterans’ coffeehouse in Killingly through its RSVP program. King said more than 250 veterans and their families attended weekly meetings, which included information about veterans’ services, speaking engagements by politicians, and of course, coffee.

King said she hopes to keep the coffeehouses going, and TVCCA will be starting another one in Norwich soon.
