Juvenile to be tried as adult in Groton shooting case

Groton — Town police announced early Wednesday morning that they had charged a juvenile with first-degree assault and other counts in connection with a shooting Sunday outside the 99 Restaurant that injured a 17-year-old.

The suspect, Cevon T. Riley, who also is 17, will be tried as an adult due to the serious nature of the charges.

Riley, of 83 Blackhall St., New London, was arraigned Wednesday in New London Superior Court on charges of first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and carrying a pistol without a permit. His case was automatically transferred from juvenile court to adult court based on the charges.

Riley's grandmother and Public Defender Kevin C. Barrs stood with him as he was presented before New London Superior Court Judge Hillary B. Strackbein.  She set his bond at $250,000, cash or surety, and continued the case until Oct. 20.

Groton Town police had announced Riley's arrest early Wednesday morning, shortly after midnight. They said the investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.

Witnesses reported seeing two people fleeing the scene after the shooting, which took place at 4:38 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the restaurant at 117 Long Hill Road. Police said the shooting was not random and those involved were not associated with the restaurant or its customers.

The victim of the shooting, who is identified in court documents as a 17-year-old male from Groton, was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and then to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

At the request of prosecutor Stephen M. Carney, Strackbein ordered the arrest warrant sealed in the case due to the ongoing investigation.

Groton Town police were assisted by the New London Police Department Patrol Division and the Regional Community Enhancement Task Force.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Groton Town police at (860) 441-6712.
