Day series on I-95 recognized by New England newspaper group

Natick, Mass. — The Day's "I-95: Deadly, Overcrowded" series was recognized Thursday by the New England Newspaper & Press Association at its fall conference.

The series, which examined 19 years of accident data on the highway, received a Publick Occurrences Award. The award, which is named after the first newspaper published in America, recognizes superior work by New England newspapers.

The judges said the series was "journalism at its best" and lauded the interactive graphics, use of data and "outstanding" human interest stories.

The series was written by Izaskun Larrañeta, Tess Townsend, Lisa McGinley and Greg Smith and edited by McGinley and Managing Editor Tim Cotter. The interactive graphics were built by Carlos Virgen, digital news director, and the series was designed online by Web Developer Joe Ruggeri and Designer Maria Reagan and in print by Copy Desk Chief John Ruddy. Photographs and videos were shot by Tim Cook, Peter Huoppi and Sean D. Elliot.

The Day also was recognized as a Distinguished Newspaper in the 20,000-35,000 circulation category.

The awards were presented at a luncheon at the Crowne Plaza hotel.
