Norwich school officials taking precautions after one student diagnosed with hand-foot-and-mouth disease

Norwich – City school officials are paying extra attention to cleaning surfaces commonly touched, such as door knobs and handles, after one student at the Kelly Middle School was diagnosed with hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

According to WebMD.com, the disease, caused by a virus, is common in children and also can occur in adults. Symptoms include sores on hands, mouth, feet and other parts of the body, which can last about a week.

Superintendent Abby Dolliver said administrators have alerted all school nurses. Only one case has been reported. She said all common surfaces are cleaned daily always, but “extra attention” is being paid to common surfaces after learning of the diagnosis.
