    Rabid skunk found in Groton

Groton — A skunk from the area of Candlewood Road was tested and found to be positive for rabies, Ledge Light Health District announced Tuesday.

The skunk was killed by a dog over the weekend. It was picked up by the town's animal control officer on Sunday and sent for testing on Monday, according to Ryan McCammon, supervisor of environmental health with Ledge Light.

No humans touched the skunk, he said.

The dog was current on its rabies vaccine but has been given a booster shot as a precaution. The dog also is being kept on home confinement as a precaution but is not being quarantined, McCammon said.

The public is reminded to refrain from feeding or approaching any wild or stray animals.

For information, call the town's animal control officer at (860) 441-6709.
