REBOUND: The Chris Herren story scheduled for Tuesday in East Lyme

The East Lyme Youth Coalition is sponsoring "REBOUND: The Chris Herren Story," a presentation featuring former NBA professional basketball player Chris Herren, on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

The program, which starts at 7 p.m. at the East Lyme High School Auditorium, is free.

It will tell the story of a "tale of descent into addiction, a miraculous recovery and his new life mission: to share his story with audiences in the hopes of reaching at least one person and making a difference in their life," according to a news release from the Parks and Recreation Department.

Herren has been alcohol and drug free since Aug. 1, 2008, and "has refocused his life to put sobriety and family above all else," the release states.

He has shared his story of abuse and recovery in his memoir, "Basketball Junkie," as well as in interviews throughout the Emmy-nominated ESPN Films documentary "Unguarded."

The presentation is being made possible by the East Lyme Youth Coalition, Southeastern Regional Action Council (SERAC), Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, Niantic Rotary Club, Fountain Timmons Team at Berkshire-Hathaway, Thomas L. Neilan and Sons Funeral Home, Village Mortgage and the Brian T. Dagle Memorial Foundation.

More information is available by contacting the Parks and Recreation Office at (860) 739-5828.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
