Two incumbents ousted from Mashantucket council

Mashantucket — A former councilor and a newcomer displaced two long-serving members of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council in voting among tribal members Sunday, the tribe announced.

Crystal Whipple, who served two terms on the council before losing her bid for a third consecutive term last year, was elected along with Merrill “Marvin” Reels. Reels is a nephew of Kenny Reels, a former tribal chairman.

    Council terms are three years.

In a separate vote, Councilor Richard E. Sebastian was elected vice chairman of the seven-member council, which governs the tribe and oversees its gaming enterprise, including Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Incumbents Marjorie Colebut-Jackson, the council secretary, and Fatima Dames, the vice chairwoman, failed to win re-election. Colebut-Jackson was seeking a fifth consecutive term while Dames was seeking a third consecutive term and fourth overall.

A total of seven tribal members were seeking the two council seats up for election.

In the vote to fill the two seats, 336 tribal voters cast ballots, according to Lori Potter, a tribal spokeswoman.

Sebastian and Councilor Roy Colebut-Ingram were nominated for vice chairman.

Sebastian, who returned to the council in 2015 after serving several terms previously, was vice chairman from 2009-11.

The other councilors who were not up for election are Rodney Butler, the chairman; Jean Swift, the treasurer; and Daniel Menihan Jr.

The new council will be inaugurated in January.
