Selectmen seek to improve look of routes 49, 184 intersection

North Stonington — The selectmen discussed a plan by Conservation Committee Chairman Bill Ricker to improve the intersection of routes 49 and 184 during a workshop Tuesday night.

Improvements to the intersection, which collects drivers from both exits off I-95, are part of the Plan of Conservation and Development, according to a drawing provided at the meeting.

Ricker said he developed the plan after stopping along the road at the intersection and noticing "here was a litter of bottles and cans, an old tire, bunch of other trash and broken glass."

After a meeting with staff from the state Department of Transportation, Ricker brought a sketch in from of the selectmen that calls for adding a “pocket park" at the northwest corner, including bushes, flowering crabapple trees and other perennials.

The selectmen said they were encouraged by the plans. Selectman Nick Mullane said he would ask a local surveyor for a free survey of the property, which Ricker said he would follow by asking for donations from local organizations for the plants. The only town contribution, he said, would be public works labor for site work.
