Three Rivers receives money to expand student services, upgrade library

Hartford — The state Bond Commission on Wednesday approved $920,169 to allow Three Rivers Community College in Norwich to expand student tutoring space and to improve the college library and student services center.

Three Rivers President Mary Ellen Jukoski, who attended the Bond Commission meeting, said the current tutoring center on the first floor of the college is cramped and there is little space for one-on-one tutoring of students.

The project will remove nearby office walls and create seven private tutoring rooms, several computer stations for students and a more comfortable waiting area for students awaiting availability of a tutor.

Jukoski said she hopes to have the tutoring center improvements done by the fall semester.

A longer-term project calls for expanding the student services center adjacent to the college library by moving the bookstore to a spot closer to the clock tower. A large “welcome area” will be created at the expanded student center, and the bond funding also will include upgrades to the library.

“I am pleased the Bond Commission and the governor prioritized this important request for Three Rivers Community College,” state Rep. Emmett Riley, D-Norwich, said in a news release following the vote. “The diversity and dedication offered in this community college to ensure students achieve their academic goals is laudable. This funding is certainly going to improve the great work they are already doing.”

“Three Rivers is a critical educational resource in our region,” state Sen. Cathy Osten, D-Sprague, said in a news release, “and this funding will allow our community college to provide students with additional services to ensure they are successful in obtaining a degree or professional certificate.”
