Preston grand list increases by 1.9 percent

Preston — The 2016 grand list of taxable property rose by $7.4 million, nearly 2 percent over the 2015 list, despite no major new development projects coming on line in town, Assessor Mildred Peringer said.

The total net grand list of real estate, personal property and motor vehicle values — not including tax-exempt properties — was $403.04 million on Oct. 1, when values are calculated for the 2017-18 town budget.

Real estate values totaled $337.5 million, an increase of $3.7 million over the 2015 totals. Personal property values totaled $27.5 million, an increase of $1.47 million, while motor vehicle values increased by $2.17 million to a new total of $37.9 million.

Peringer said the increases were calculated across the board, with no single development or category of development causing a spike in the totals.

First Selectman Robert Congdon welcomed the tax base increase, which would add $176,359 in revenue at this year’s tax rate of 23.75 mills.
