Author of book about Rachel Carson to speak at Mitchell College

New London — Author and environmental advocate Robert K. Musil will share his insights in a talk open to the public titled “Rachel Carson and Today’s Environment: What Would She Do?” at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Weller Center at Mitchell College.

    Admission is free.

Musil is the author of "Rachel Carson and Her Sisters: Extraordinary Women Who Have Shaped America's Environment," which was named an Outstanding 2016 Book by Choice magazine. He is president and chief executive officer of the Rachel Carson Council. During his talk, he will discuss what Rachel Carson, an American environmentalist and the subject of a recent PBS documentary, would do in the face of current challenges to environmental protection.

“Rachel Carson never gave up in the face of attacks on her by polluters and right-wing politicians. She would be leading the outcry today about the elimination of environmental protections and laws being carried out by the new Administration,” he said in a news release from the college.

Musil is also the author of, "Hope for a Heated Planet: How Americans Are Fighting Global Warming and Building a Better Future," and "Washington in Spring: A Nature Journal for a Changing Capital." After the talk, he will sign copies of his books, which will be on sale at the event.

A trustee at Mitchell, where he receive a doctor of humane letters in 2009, Musil is a senior fellow at the Center for Congressional Studies at American University in Washington, D.C., where he teaches environmental politics.
