Rabid raccoon found on Starr Street in New London

New London — A raccoon found on Starr Street has tested positive for rabies, Ledge Light Health District announced Tuesday.

The raccoon was found after it fought with and injured a dog on Monday morning, said Ryan McCammon, Ledge Light’s supervisor of environmental health. The dog was current on its rabies shots but received a booster shot as well as treatment of its injuries, McCammon said. The dog’s owner has been told to keep the dog at home for 45 days as a precaution, he added.

The dog’s owner kicked the raccoon while it was fighting with the dog, McCammon said. Because of the contact, the owner is receiving rabies shots as a precaution. In addition, two family members who cared for the dog’s injuries also are receiving rabies shots as a precaution.

The raccoon at first ran from the scene but was later found and killed by the city’s animal control officer, McCammon said.

The public is reminded to refrain from feeding or approaching any wild or stray animals.
